8 Reasons Why You Fall Off The Wagon

I came across this article in my inbox yesterday and thought some of you could get some use out of it.

THE 8 REASONS:

1. NO FOCUS: you didn't set goals, you didn't put your goals in writing, and or you didn't stay focused on your goals daily (by reading them, affirming them, looking at a vision board, etc.)

2. NO PRIORITIES: you may have set a goal, but you didn't put it on or near the top of your priorities list. For example, your goal is six pack abs, but drinking beer and eating fast food on the weekend is higher on your priorities list than having a flat stomach.

3. NO SUPPORT SYSTEM: you tried to go at it alone; no buddy system, training partners, family, spouse, friends, mentors or coaches to turn to for information and emotional support when the going got tough.

4. NO ACCOUNTABILITY - you didn't keep score for your own accountability - with a progress chart, weight record, measurements, food journal, training journal, and you didn't set up external accountability (ie, report to someone else or show your results to someone else)

5. NO PATIENCE: you were only thinking short term and had unrealistic expectations. You expected 10 pounds a week or 5 pounds a week or 3 pounds a week, so the first week you lost "only" 1 or 2 pounds or hit a plateau, you gave up.

6. NO PLANNING: you winged it. You walked into the gym without having a workout in hand, on paper, you didn't plan your workouts into your weekly schedule; you didn't have a menu on paper, you didn't make time (so instead you made excuses, like "I'm too busy")

7. NO BALANCE: your diet or training program was too extreme.
You went the all or nothing, "I want it now" route instead of the moderate, slow-and-steady wins the race route.

8. NO PERSONALIZATION: your nutrition or training program was the wrong one for you. It might have worked for someone else, but it didn't suit your schedule, personality, lifestyle, disposition or body type.

So there you have it - 8 reasons why most people to fall off the wagon! Have you been making these mistakes? If so, the solutions are clear and simple:

focus, prioritize, get support, be accountable, be patient, plan, balance and personalize.

How To Handle The Flood of NEW Trainers in Guelph?

With the current popularity of an ever growing and exciting industry, personal trainers are on the upside everywhere.

With personal training certifications available over the weekend, how does the average consumer know who to hire?

Hiring a trainer can be one of the best investments you can make in your entire life. If you can find a friend to go through this transformation with you—great, but often times the schedules don’t jive and the intensity might suffer from gabbing too much.

If you are interested in hiring a trainer for a session once, twice or three times a week, I definitely recommend that you shop around. DO NOT walk into a gym and say you need a trainer. They will probably assign you to someone who is new and doesn’t really have that much experience as the ones who so aren't seeing any new people.

Top 9 Things To Look For When Hiring A Personal Trainer

1) Ask for a workout. You can usually get the first one for free, but some of the good ones will charge for the first session.

2) Do they have good communication skills? Are they able to quickly and easily convey their message to you?

3) Do they motivate you? Were they able to light a fire inside you and get you excited about all that fitness will bring you?

4) Did they talk about you or themselves? Most rookie trainers will talk about themselves hoping to impress you and sell you on their services. The conversation should be all about you.

5) Did they uncover your motivation? For a trainer to really make the session intense, they need to motivate you with what drives you most. For example, yelling “come on do 5 more if you want to look good this summer,” means little to someone who wants to increase energy so they can work longer and win that big promotion or business deal.

6) Did they teach you correct form? Are they constantly correcting your form until you have it just right, or do they let you slack-off?

7) Do they make you laugh? I know this may seem unimportant, but find a trainer that you like. They don’t have to be a comedian, but a few laughs go a long way.

8) Check their credentials. You would not believe the amount of trainers being employed in gyms today without the proper certifications. Another thing to be aware of is that not all certifications are created equal. NSCA, ASCM and ISSA are a few of the top certifications today, with hundreds of others filling in the blanks. Stick to the big 3 and you’ll have better luck.

9) One of the best indicators of a good trainer is their ability to retain clientele. Does your trainer keep clients for a long time or is his client roster spinning like a top?

Believe me, a good trainer is hard to find. I am constantly looking for great, new trainers that I can develop, but the pickings are slim. Be patient, look around, ask for references and remember that you usually get what you pay for.

Dinner Plate to Dessert Plate

One of the simplest and quickest ways to improve your fat loss goals is to stop eating on dinner plates and start using dessert plates.

The portion sizes at your local restaurants and T.V. commercials has you believing the body needs a hell of a lot more calories than it really does.

When you break it down and see the numbers, you can easily get all that you need to support lean gain while losing fat by using a dessert plate for your meals.

Training Blues

It has been a while since I last posted so let me fill you in. I was contracted to help install a complete system of operations for a few large gyms in Vancouver B.C.

I had to implement and train the staff on everything from training protocols and payroll procedures to hiring practices and how to close a sale.

This is my area of expertise and I was excited to get a chance to do it and will be doing a lot more of that this coming year.

Through the week up to this trip I was working very hard and staying up very late night after night getting everything ready. For a lot of other busy professionals out there I know you can relate.

Here is what I learned.

Even though it didn't really seem like work because I enjoyed it I was stressing myself out needlessly. I WAY over delivered and half the stuff I did they skimmed right over. When preparing projects don't kill yourself and put your health at risk, it's not worth it.

Now I am really sick, can't work out for almost a week now (which has never happened) and I feel like a slug. I don't care what anyone says, I am definitely working out today no matter what. Even if I pass out!

That is not my advice to you but what can I say.

Next Blog post I'll talk about the influx of personal training professional in your town and what to be aware of!
